Mid-Shore Family YMCA Funny Bunny 5K Run/Walk - Saturday, March 8, 2008

Mid-Shore Family YMCA, Salisbury, Maryland

The rainy weather the night before and the cloudy and cool conditions on race morning did not stop the more than forty participants from coming to the Mid-Shore Family YMCA's annual Funny Bunny 5K Run/Walk in Salisbury. There were fiftheen finishers in the half-mile race on the track and thirty-two finishers in the 5K run that started in the back of the YMCA, ran through some neighborhoods and into the Salisbury City Park by the zoo, and then finished behind the YMCA. This is perhaps one of the more challenging 5K courses in Salisbury, as there are a couple of steady up and down hills and then a fairly tough uphill towards the end of the race right by the Salisbury Zoo.

The half-mile race, which mainly seemed to be for younger runners, was won by Ryan Duncan in 3:50. Lorenzo Taylor was not too far behind in 4:05 followed closely by third place overall, Casandra Mullins, in 4:08. Mullins was the first female finisher as well! Geno Lowe IV finished right behind Mullins in 4:10, and was the third male finisher. Behind him was Hope Hare, the second female finisher in 4:24 with Denequa Hills in 4:46 as the third female finisher.
The youngest male and female finishers in this half-mile race were both five years of age. Rence Davis finished sixth overall with a time of 4:45 and was the fourth and youngest male in the race. Then, Mikayla Denault was ninth overall with a time of 5:19 and was the youngest female finisher in the race.

The 5K race saw some decent performances as well. Zachary Bettes, who runs and plays soccer for Parkside High School, won the race in 19:02, one of his fastest 5K times-to-date! Noah Wood was not far behind in 19:32. Then, Brian Zockoll finished third for the men in 21:21.
Zockoll's son, Luke, celebrated his 13th birthday by running his first race and finishing 11th overall with a time of 27:12.

Theresa Moody won the women's race by a solid margin of almost two minutes, and finished fourth overall with a time of 22:45. The second female finisher was Catherine Hoffman in 24:44, with Laura Hunsberger not far behind in 25:18.

Nine girls and six boys finished the half-mile race and seventeen women and fifteen men finished the 5K.
